Education at Denny

The Abbey and the Farmland Museum

Visits

The Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey is a delightful and stimulating place for a visit, containing a whole range of different historical experiences.

The twelth-century Abbey, owned by English Heritage, is a fascinating ancient monument, which is a warren of different building styles and clues to the tortured and fragmented history of religion and architecture in Britain.

The Farmland Museum, with its array of farm machinery and equipment gives a real insight into the development of mechanisation and farming in the years since the Agricultural Revolution, while the artefacts and memories of the Fens offer a rare view into a unique and almost-forgotten way of life.

In addition there is the farmworkers cottage, lovingly restored to give a flavour of life at a time somewhere between the close of the Victorian era and the end of the Second World War, and a fully-stocked village shop from a similar period.

There is a purpose-built education room, a cafe and gift shop, and the site is spacious enough to cater for groups of up to 100 children.

Education is run by an experienced Education Officer, and a number of trained and experienced volunteers.

School visits

We have a range of sessions available for your visit, and are adding more all the time. We are also prepared to adapt and follow your suggestions if you have a particular idea you want us to try.
The sessions currently available fall under three main headings:

Craft
Handling
Exploring

We recommend that any visit include at least one from each of these categories. Generally, the first two are run by museum staff and trained volunteers, and the last can be conducted by teachers themselves.

You may want to choose these sessions according to general interest, or you may want to choose a series of activities which are based on one particular topic area of your curriculum. For example:

Tudor/Medieval life
World War 2 experience
Fenland life
Farming and food
Victorian life
Life in the 1930's
Waste tells a story

If you go for one of these options we will ensure that the sessions you choose are tailored to this topic area.

Teachers who have made previous visits can be reassured that their old favourites will still be available. For topic details, click here

Please give us a call; I would be happy to discuss with you any aspect of your proposed visit.

We also welcome teachers who wish to make preliminary visits. Please contact me about this and I will be happy to show you around. These visits are free, regardless of whether you finally book with us or not.

Accessibility
While most areas of the museum are wheelchair-friendly, there are gravel paths, which could cause difficulties, and we regret that the top floors of the abbey and cottage are not accessible for wheelchairs.
